7 Ways to Take Care of Yourself When You’re Feeling Anxious

I love hearing new ideas of ways that I can take care of my mental health and help myself when I’m feeling anxious. I always welcome new suggestions because you never know what’s going to work for you. It definitely takes time to know what to do when you’re in a situation that causes anxiety and how to care for yourself best. Here are some tips that I’ve learned over time to help me in these situations!

1- Take a time-out

Taking a step back when you’re in a stressful situation is one of the best ways to refocus and realize that you are going to be okay. This looks different for everyone, you just need to find what works for you. Whether it be reading a book for 1 hour, getting a massage, meditation or learning different techniques to relax, these can all be ways to take a time-out from your anxiety.

2- Practice breathing exercises

There are countless breathing exercises that are recommended to help you calm down when you’re feeling anxious. One that I like is called “The Measured Breath”. You breath in slowly through your nose and count to four. Keep your shoulders down and allow your stomach to expand as you breathe in. Hold the breath for a moment. Now release your breath slowly and smoothly as you count to seven. Other exercises include “The Bumble Bee Breath”, “Belly Breathing” and so many more. Find the one that works best for you!

3- Talk to someone

Whether it be a professional, family member or friend, it’s important to tell someone how you’re feeling. When you feel anxious and overwhelmed it’s helpful to tell someone and inform them on how they can best help you, because often times, they don’t know.

4- Exercise

Exercising, especially on a regular basis, helps you feel healthy and overall better about yourself. Finding a fitness routine that works with my schedule was monumental for my stress and anxiety.

5- Get organized

You can organize your thoughts, closet, planner, bathroom, kitchen, etc. Whatever it may be, being organized helps you prepare for life in a way that nothing else can (in my opinion). There are countless resources available if you want to learn how to organize something specific, they range from YouTube videos to articles, tv shows, blogs and more. If I didn’t have my organizational skills I truthfully don’t know what I would do.

6- Welcome humor

Moments full of anxiety are some of the hardest times to be able to have a laugh. Learning to laugh in moments of stress can turn situations around completely. If this is something that works for you, a great idea would be to tell a family member or friend so they can support you through humor when appropriate.

7- Journal

Writing down your feelings in moments of anxiousness can be powerful and telling to look back on. Reading about the thoughts you had during those high-stress moments can be helpful to learn more about yourself and what you need to take care of your mental health.
